The Application of Butyl Lactate

The chemical name of butyl lactate is alpha-hydroxypropionate butyl ester, which is a butyl ester derivative of lactic acid produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates similar to sugar and butanol. It is a colorless transparent liquid with a sweet taste. Cream aroma and milk aroma, easily soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, acetone, esters, etc., partially hydrolyzed when miscible with water, non-toxic, good solubility, and completely biodegradable in nature.

As Food additive

In terms of solubility, butyl lactate is slightly soluble in water, but miscible in alcohol and ether. Compatible with most paint solvents, thinners and oils. It can dissolve nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, natural resin and synthetic rosin, etc.

Butyl lactate was used as a high boiling point solvent. It has excellent solubility for film-forming agents such as nitrocellulose. Usually, it is necessary to add a co-solvent to adjust the viscosity and volatilization rate. As a cosmetic solvent, it is mainly used as the main solvent of cosmetics such as nail polish. It is used as raw material of medicine and intermediate of pesticide, also used as spray paint solvent. It is an edible spice that is allowed to be used. It is mainly used to formulate flavors of dairy products, cheese and butterscotch. It can also be used to prepare vanilla, mushroom, nut, coconut, coffee and other flavors.
